If you feel under the weather, your first port of call should be the local chemist (farmacia). You'll find them very helpful and they usually speak good English. They will often advise a remedy or if a visit to the doctor is necessary. Make sure it is the pharmacist that you take advice from.

Make sure you take some money with you - as a rough guide a consultation will cost around 60-75 euros. Remember to keep all receipts for any medical treatment and medication to enable you to claim on your insurance when you return home.

If you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you can receive state treatment at the Spanish National Health clinic (Insalud) which is located next to the Church on Avda des Puig des Castallet: Tel: 971 694 615. Treatment is free but you will usually be expected to pay up to 40% of the cost of any prescribed medicines (pensioners should be able to claim this back using the EHIC).

If you require an ambulance in an extreme emergency then call the Spanish ambulance service on 061 or the European multi-lingual SOS Helpline on 112. You may be asked to pay the ambulance cost when it arrives so have some cash available.
